Import & Export
Importing
RightNote allows you to import existing data from a variety of different file formats. Below is a table that describes what type of note will be created from what type of source file.
File Extension |
Imported note type |
.txt |
Plain note |
.rtf |
RichEdit note |
.rvf, .htm, .doc |
RichView note |
.xls, .csv |
Spreadsheet note |
all other text files |
Syntax highlighter note |
binary files |
binary files cannot be imported and will be skipped |
When importing you can choose whether to import the file(s) as:
- A standard note - copies the file data into a new note
- virtual note - creates a "virtual link" to this file. When you edit this file in RightNote then it is actually editing this external file.
- link - creates a shortcut to this file. When you click on "launch" then this file will be opened by it's associated application.
Note: Although you can import Microsoft Word (.doc) and Microsoft Excel files (.xls), you can not make them virtual.
Tip:
You can easily import files by drag 'n drop from Windows Explorer.
1. First make sure that RightNote is NOT minimised to the system tray, i.e. the application bar is visible in the task bar.
2. Select the desired files in Windows Explorer.
3. Left click and then drag them over the RightNote application bar (RightNote will maximise) and then to the desired destination tree or node - then drop (release mouse). |
Exporting
The export dialog allows you to control which notes will be exported, and to what format.
The following table describes what output formats are available for different note types:
Note type |
Export formats |
Plain note |
.txt |
RichEdit note |
.txt, .rtf, .htm |
RichView note |
.txt, .rtf, .htm, .rvf |
Spreadsheet note |
.xls, .csv |
Syntax highlighter note |
The output file extension is specified for each note within the note editor |
The "export file format" combobox controls the output format for RichView type notes. To set the output format for RichEdit and Spreadsheet type notes click on the "More..." button.
You can merge all notes to a single note and then export. In this case all notes are merged internally to a RichView type note and then exported. So for a merged note possible export formats are: .txt, .rtf, .htm and .rvf.
